“Flaca” – (which means “a skinny woman” or “my sweetheart”) is one of the shorter stories in the book. It follows one of Yunior’s relationships from beginning to end, where he ultimately loses her because he never allows himself to truly connect with her.
“Nilda” – One of Yunior’s first loves, who ultimately fell for his macho older brother Rafa. For an entire summer Yunior could only stand by and watch his brother treated her badly, so much so that he was in disbelief when, after Rafa died of cancer, Nilda said, “He was a good guy to me.” They part ways and never see each other again.
“The Sun, the Moon, the Stars” – Magdalena finds out Yunior’s been cheating, and they try to fix their broken relationship during a vacation in Santo Domingo. This is difficult because Magda thinks all Dominican men are cheaters.
